Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, hidden photos sync to iCloud and to each device that uses your Apple Account. If iCloud Photos is off, they go into your iCloud Backup and into any backup on a computer. Hiding a photo changes only where the Photos app shows it. It does not change where the photo is stored.
People hide a photo for a reason. It might be a picture from a doctor's appointment, a screenshot of a bank statement, or a photo meant for one person only. The Hidden album feels like a private drawer: the photo leaves your library, your Memories and your widgets, and a Face ID check guards the album. It is natural to think that the photo is now in one safe place. In fact, a hidden photo is stored in as many places as any other photo. So the useful question is where those copies are, and who can open each one.
This guide follows one hidden photo through your iPhone, your other devices, iCloud and your backups. Then it explains how to delete a photo from all of them, and how a vault keeps fewer copies.
Hiding a photo changes where Photos shows it, not where it is stored
The Hidden album is a filter on your library, not a separate store. The photo stays in the same library, with the same protection as your other photos. The diagram shows each place that can keep a copy of it.
A photo in the Hidden album
This iPhoneAnyone who knows your passcode.
Your iPad and MacAnyone who can unlock them, if iCloud Photos is on.
iCloud PhotosYou, on iCloud.com. Apple keeps the keys, unless Advanced Data Protection is on.
iCloud BackupYour library is in the backup, if iCloud Photos is off.
A backup on a computerAnyone who can use the computer, if the backup is not encrypted.
Recently DeletedFor 30 days after you delete the photo.
Hiding a photo changes where Photos shows it. It does not remove any of these copies.
On the iPhone itself, the Hidden album is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. The lock is the same one that unlocks the phone, so anyone who knows your passcode can open the album. Apps can reach it too. An app that you give full access to your photo library can ask iOS for hidden photos. To see which apps have full access, open the Settings app, then Privacy and Security, then Photos.
With iCloud Photos on, every device and iCloud has a copy
iCloud Photos keeps one library on all of your devices, and the Hidden album is part of that library. A photo that you hide on your iPhone is also in the Hidden album on your iPad, on your Mac, and on iCloud.com.
This matters most for the devices that you forget about. An old iPad that a child uses, a Mac that the family shares, or a phone that you sold without a reset can still be signed in to your Apple Account. On each one, the lock of that device opens the album. To see your devices, open the Settings app and tap your name. The list is at the bottom. Remove each device that you do not use now.
In iCloud, the protection depends on one setting. With standard data protection, which is the default, Apple keeps the encryption keys for iCloud Photos, so Apple is able to decrypt them, for example to answer a legal request. With Advanced Data Protection on, iCloud Photos is end-to-end encrypted, and only your devices hold the keys. Advanced Data Protection is not available in all countries. To check it, open the Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud. What is end-to-end encryption? explains the difference.
With iCloud Photos off, your backups have a copy
If you turn off iCloud Photos to keep your photos on the phone, they still leave it. Your iCloud Backup then includes your photo library, hidden photos included. A backup on a Mac or a PC includes it too.
A backup on a computer is easy to forget. It stays on the computer until you delete it, and it can be years old. If you did not turn on Encrypt local backup in Finder or in the Apple Devices app, anyone who can use that computer can read the backup with common tools.
Deleted photos stay for a while as well. A photo that you delete goes to Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. Recently Deleted is locked in the same way as the Hidden album, with the same passcode.
To remove a photo, delete each copy
A photo is only gone when each copy is gone. These steps remove it from each place in the diagram:
- Keep a copy, if you want one. Move the photo into a vault before you delete it.
- Delete the photo in Photos. With iCloud Photos on, this deletes it from iCloud and from your other devices.
- Empty Recently Deleted. Open the album, tap Select, then tap Delete All.
- Check old backups. Delete the computer backups that you do not need. If iCloud Photos was off, your next iCloud Backup replaces the last one.
- Check your devices. Remove old devices from your Apple Account, and reset the devices that you do not use now.
There can be copies outside Photos too. If you sent the photo in Messages, WhatsApp or another chat app, that app can keep its own copy, and so can the person who received it.
A vault keeps fewer copies, and encrypts each one
A vault app with its own storage changes the picture. DotSafe keeps a photo in a store that Photos, backups and other apps cannot reach, and it encrypts each copy with a key from your pattern.
A photo in a DotSafe vault
This deviceEncrypted. Only the pattern of the vault opens it.
Device backupsNo copy. DotSafe keeps its storage out of iCloud Backup and computer backups.
Photos and other appsNo copy, and no access.
iCloud, with ProOnly if you turn on sync for the vault. Encrypted blocks that Apple cannot read.
On another device, the vault opens only with its pattern.
Fewer copies has a cost, and you should know it before you move anything. Device backups do not include your vaults, so a vault on Free is only on the device where you made it. If you lose that device, you lose the vault. With Pro, you can turn on sync for each vault. DotSafe then keeps an encrypted copy in your iCloud, and you can restore the vault on a new device with its pattern. Backups and iCloud sync has the details.

For many photos, the Hidden album is enough. If no one else knows your passcode and the photos are not sensitive, it does its job well. A vault is for the photos that must not be on every device and in every backup. Is the iPhone Hidden album private? can help you decide.
Questions
Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. The Hidden album syncs with the rest of your library, and you can see it on iCloud.com and on your other devices.
Are hidden photos included in an iCloud Backup?
Only if iCloud Photos is off. In that case, your iCloud Backup includes your photo library, and hidden photos are part of it. A backup on a computer also includes them when iCloud Photos is off.
Can someone see my hidden photos on another device?
Yes. Each device that uses your Apple Account with iCloud Photos on has the Hidden album. The passcode or Face ID of that device opens it.
Can other apps see my hidden photos?
An app that has full access to your photo library can ask iOS for hidden photos. An app with limited access sees only the photos that you select. Check the access of each app in Settings, Privacy and Security, Photos.
How do I delete a hidden photo from iCloud?
Delete it in Photos, then empty Recently Deleted. With iCloud Photos on, this deletes it from iCloud and from your other devices. Old computer backups keep their copy until you delete the backup.
