With Pro, DotSafe can keep an encrypted copy of a vault in your iCloud. The copy is a backup, and it keeps the vault the same on your iPhone, iPad and other devices.
What iCloud receives
DotSafe encrypts everything on your device before it uploads it. iCloud stores only padded, encrypted blocks, and cannot tell which vault they belong to. Apple cannot read them, and we do not receive them. Cover records go up too, so the number of records does not show how many vaults you have.
DotSafe uses the private iCloud database of your Apple Account. It does not use iCloud Drive or iCloud Backup for vault data.
Turn on sync
- Open the vault, then open Settings.
- Under iCloud, tap Sync this vault.
- Turn on the Sync this vault switch.
Sync is a setting for each vault. You can sync your main vault and keep another vault on one device only. The setting is the same on all of your devices.
The index of the vault syncs on any connection. Photos, videos and files sync on Wi-Fi. To use mobile data too, open Settings, then App, and turn on Use mobile data.
What you need
- Pro.
- The same Apple Account on each device, signed in to iCloud.
- iCloud Keychain on. DotSafe keeps a random salt there. Each device needs the same salt to make the same keys from your pattern. If a device's keys do not match, DotSafe asks you to turn on iCloud Keychain.
- Space in iCloud. iOS shows how much space DotSafe uses in Settings, under your name, then iCloud.
Restore a vault
There is no restore screen and no list of backups, because a list would show your vaults. To restore a vault on a new device, or after a duress erase:
- Install DotSafe and sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account.
- Draw the pattern of the vault.
- DotSafe finds the vault in iCloud, shows "Restoring…" and opens it.
Thumbnails download first. Full photos, videos and files download when you open them, or in the background. Vaults that you do not draw stay in iCloud only.
When two devices change the same item
DotSafe merges the changes item by item. Items that either device added are kept, and deletions on either device apply. If both devices changed the same item, the latest change wins.
Turn off sync
Turn off Sync this vault in the same place. DotSafe deletes the copy in iCloud. Each device keeps its own copy, and sync turns off on your other devices too. To turn off sync, you confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, and you must be online.
If Pro ends
Sync pauses. Nothing is deleted on your device or in iCloud. When Pro starts again, DotSafe merges the changes from each side.
If sync does not work
The status on the iCloud page says what is wrong, for example "iCloud is full" or "Offline". If the cause is not clear, tap Sync details, copy the details and email them to dotsafe@mobiusly.com. They contain no names and no files.
